Should You Get Your Eyes Dilated?

Having your eyes dilated is a common procedure performed during an eye examination, where special drops widen the pupil to allow the doctor to examine the back of the eye. This allows for a thorough evaluation of the retina, optic nerve, and blood vessels — key structures for detecting conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy early.

During dilation, your eye doctor places special drops in your eyes that cause the pupil to widen (dilate). This typically takes about 20 to 30 minutes to take full effect. Once dilated, the doctor can use specialized instruments to get a much better view of the internal structures of your eye.

Eye dilation is especially important for people over the age of 60, those with a family history of eye disease, individuals with diabetes, and anyone experiencing changes in their vision. The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends that adults get a comprehensive dilated eye exam at least once by age 40.

After dilation, your vision will be blurry for a few hours, especially for close-up tasks. Your eyes will also be more sensitive to light. It is a good idea to bring sunglasses to your appointment and to arrange for someone else to drive you home if possible.

While eye dilation might seem inconvenient, it is one of the most important tools your eye doctor has for protecting your long-term vision health. The brief discomfort is far outweighed by the potential for early detection and treatment of serious eye conditions.
